WE USE COOKIES ON OUR SITE AND WE NEED YOUR CONSENT TO DO THIS.

TO FIND OUT WHY PLEASE CLICK ON THE ARTICLES BELOW

DOES OUR SITE USE COOKIES ?

YES WE DO !!

At this point we are led to believe half our customers will leave our site and we will be out of business.

We believe in honesty and transparency and hope that you value this as much as we value you as a customer. If you are worried about cookies please take the time to read the articles below, and then at least you can make an informed decision.

ARE YOU WORRIED THIS MAY UPSET CUSTOMERS ?

YES it may.

But we also believe our customer's trust us and if we give them the facts then they will understand why we use cookies and that there is nothing to be concerned about.

Cookies have always been used on sites and we hope that by clearly explaining what a cookie is and why we use them our customers will appreciate this openness and that rather than upset them this will be reassure them and give them more confidence to use our site safely and enjoy the experience.

WHY ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT THIS NOW ?

Put simply the law has changed and by the middle of this year all websites are obliged to abide by the new regulations which are now in force.

We want to deal with this openly and make our customers aware of what now are their legal rights.

HOW HAS THE LAW CHANGED ?

New rules concerning the use of cookies on websites came into force with the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) (Amendment) Regulations 2011.

These Regulations changed the way websites can use cookies and came into effect last year with an easing in period up to the middle of this year to allow websites to adapt to the changes.

SO WHAT HAS CHANGED ?

Basically it is all about consent.

Prior to these regulations websites were only required to inform you that they used cookies. Most web sites just included this in their terms and conditions and it was never considered important enough to require anything else to be done.

Under the new regulations you are required to give consent before a site can place cookies on your computer.

THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE and means that we are required to actively obtain your consent to put cookies from our site onto your computer.

CAN I GIVE MY CONSENT BY DEFAULT ?

Technically speaking under the new regulations you must GIVE CONSENT so you cannot in theory give your consent by default.

However as no one actually seems to know how a site is expected to obtain this consent from every customer without asking on every page for your consent using annoying popup's, our view is that having made all the information prominently available to you your continued use of our site is your active consent for us to place cookies on your computer for the purposes as described in the articles below.

IF YOU ARE NOT IN AGREEMENT WITH THIS POLICY then you must exercise your right to leave our site and we apologise for not being able to be of service to you. You may also wish to read the section below on how to remove any cookies we may already have put on your computer.

WHAT IF I DON''T GIVE MY CONSENT ?

As you will see if you continue to read below we need cookies in order for our site to work correctly and provide you with the best experience.

If you stay on our site cookies will be placed on your computer (as they will be on most sites you visit).

If you do not wish for this to happen then the only option is for you to leave our site now.

Before you do this we would ask that you read the articles below to fully understand why we need to use cookies. If you are still not happy you can leave and easily delete any existing cookies already on your computer using one of our guides below.

WHAT IS A COOKIE ?

Well apart from a scrumptious biscuit it is also a small and harmless text file that is put on your computer each time you visit our site.

It contains no personal information but it is a unique number that is allocated to you as an anonymous visitor and allows our site to see which pages you visit and helps with things like keeping your purchases together in your online basket.

ARE COOKIES DANGEROUS?

NO

(Unless you eat the whole packet!)

The cookies we use cannot work like a virus and they cannot identify any information private or otherwise other than you visited our site.

They simply allocate an anonymous number to you that our site can read and therefore knows where you are and what you viewed, but never who you are or any other personal information about you.

SO WHY USE COOKIES ?

There are various reasons and there are also various cookies so we will look at each type in turn.

Firstly parts of our site simply would not work properly without the use of cookies. An example of this is the shopping cart. Cookies are used so our site knows which items you have chosen and if you choose more than one item it knows to keep them together in your basket. It does this because even though the site may not know who you are at this stage it can identify an anonymous shopper by using the unique number contained in the cookie. Once you leave our site these cookies "self destruct" and are known as "session cookies".

WHAT OTHER COOKIES ARE USED ON OUR SITE ?

If we had a shop on the high street our staff could see which part of the shop you visited and more importantly which parts you didn't visit. This would enable us to make the areas you did not visit more attractive so we could improve your shopping experience next time you came. We would also see you face to face so next time you visited we could welcome you as a returning customer.

We use a cookie to track which pages you visit on our site and if you are a returning customer. Yet again the cookie does not identify you personally only that you have or have not visited previously and which pages you viewed. Unless you delete this cookie after your visit it will stay on your machine doing no harm until next time you visit our site when the unique cookie number will simply tell us you have visited before. You can delete all cookies on your computer at any time and we give detailed information how to do this further down the page.

DO YOU USE GOOGLE COOKIES ?

YES.

We take part in something called Google analytics and yes this does mean we share the unique number in the cookie with Google so they can provide us with information that we can use to help us better understand how our customers use our site and help us to improve the customer experience for future visits.

It also helps us understand if any visitors have come to our site as a result of any adverts we might have placed online using Google ads. These are the ads you see at the right hand side of your screen (and sometimes at the top) when you do a Google search. The cookie allows Google to tell us if someone has visited our site as a direct result of clicking on one of these ads and as we have to pay for this type of advertising it means we can measure if it has been worthwhile for us to run the adverts. If we had a shop on the high street we could get customer feedback about any adverts we had run by asking customers if they had seen our advert in the newspaper or on a billboard etc and using cookies is how we measure the success or otherwise of our online advertising campaigns.

SO YOU GIVE GOOGLE MY INFORMATION ?

NO.

We do not share any information with Google or anyone else except for the anonymous number in the cookie which in no way can be linked to you or any personal information we may hold about you as a customer on our site.

The beauty of the cookie is that it can uniquely identify you for tracking purposes when you visit our site but it never knows who you actually are. You are always an anonymous visitor who can be identified only by a unique number that has no connection to your name, address or other personal information.

CAN I STOP COOKIES BEING PUT ON MY COMPUTER ?

YES YOU CAN.

If you feel strongly enough about not having cookies put on your computer and understand that this might have a detrimental effect on your use of sites on the internet, then all web browsers enable you to set your cookie preferences before you start surfing and you can alter your settings on your browser to achieve this. In fact this is probably the way that effective implementation of these regulations will eventually work. Browsers will be developed that could alert users to the kind of cookies sites use and offer them a choice as to if these cookies can be placed on their computer.
